The Books

Atlas Of The Heart - Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience
By: Dr. Brené Brown

“If we want to find the way back to ourselves and one another, we need language and the grounded confidence to both tell our stories and to be stewards of the stories that we hear. In Atlas of the Heart, we explore eighty-seven of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human and walk through a new framework for cultivating meaningful connection. This is for the mapmakers and travelers in all of us.”

No Bad Parts - Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model
By: Richard C. Schwartz, PhD

“Discover an empowering new way of understanding your multifaceted mind - and healing the many parts that make you who you are.
Is there just one “you”? We’ve been taught to believe we have a single identity, and to feel fear or shame when we can’t control the inner voices that don’t match the ideal of who we think we should be. Yet Dr. Richard Schwartz’s research now challenges this “mono-mind” theory. “All of us are born with many sub-minds - or parts,” says Dr. Schwartz. “These parts are not imaginary or symbolic. They are individuals who exist as an internal family within us - and the key to health and happiness is to honor, understand, and love every part.”

Rising Strong™ Weekend Intensive - Camping Edition

What Is Rising Strong™?

The physics of vulnerability is simple: If we are brave enough, often enough, we will fall. Rising Strong™ is a book and curriculum about what it takes to get back up and how owning our stories of struggle gives us the power to write a daring new ending. Struggle can be our greatest call to courage and the clearest path to a wholehearted life.

Throughout the past year+ I’ve witnessed and listened to a lot of falls. The collective grief and trauma that the pandemic created has put many in a state of overwhelm and depression, and the prevalence of numbing and relationship disappointment are up. Our resources to manage our challenges are so fatigued. How do we show up in new ways when we feel so depleted and spent?

When I thought about getting back to offering weekend intensives, I knew without a doubt, Rising Strong™ was the journey I wanted to guide people on. For the “brave and brokenhearted,” let’s come together to create a collective of healing, hope, and compassion.

This weekend intensive offers you an opportunity to dive into your story and look at it in a way you've never looked at it before. I am confident you'll walk away having created a brave new ending to your struggle.

Weekend Logistics and Details

Workshop Schedule: Friday 1-6, Saturday 9-4, Sunday 9-2
Location: Ward, CO (camping and cabin space available)
Investment: $600/person (includes workshop materials, water, and snacks) a 50% deposit is required to reserve your spot, space is limited to eight participants. A signed liability waiver is required for all participants, as well as COVID vaccination.

Camping Details: You are invited to stay on-site during the weekend intensive. The cabin is quite rustic (no electricity or running water, but there is an outhouse!), and sits in a beautiful, secluded area. If you stay on-site, there are spaces to pitch a tent, or park a camper/van if that’s how you roll. If you’re open to sharing space with other participants, there’s also seven separate beds in the cabin.

As for food. I will provide water and snacks during the workshop times. Outside of that, you’re asked to bring your own meals. A camping stove will be available, as well as a grill. If there are no fire bans, you’ll also have the option to cook in the open fire.

Outside of workshop time, I invite you to use the space to relax, hike, sit around the fire, and indulge in self-care!

Braving The Wilderness - The Quest for True Belonging and The Courage to Stand Alone

BY: Brené Brown

“True belonging doesn’t require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are. Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives—experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization. With her trademark mix of research, storytelling, and honesty, Brown will again change the cultural conversation while mapping a clear path to true belonging.”

Cassandra Speaks - When Women are the Storytellers, the Human Story Changes

BY: Elizabeth Lesser

Cassandra Speaks is about the stories we tell and how those stories become the culture. It’s about the stories we still blindly cling to, and the ones that cling to us: the origin tales, the guiding myths, the religious parables, the literature and films and fairy tales passed down through the centuries about women and men, power and war, sex and love, and the values we live by. Stories written mostly by men with lessons and laws for all of humanity. We have outgrown so many of them, and still they endure. This book is about what happens when women are the storytellers too - when we speak from our authentic voices, when we flex our values, when we become protagonists in the tales we tell about what it means to be human.”

Know My Name: A Memoir By: Chanel Miller
Content Warning - This book discusses sexual assault, PTSD, and rape culture.
In this memoir of trauma and transcendence, Chanel Miller illuminates a culture biased to protect perpetrators, indicting a criminal justice system designed to fail the most vulnerable, and, ultimately, shining with the courage required to move through suffering and live a full and beautiful life. Know My Name will forever transform the way we think about sexual assault, challenging our beliefs about what is acceptable and speaking truth to the tumultuous reality of healing. Entwining pain, resilience, and humor, this memoir will stand as a modern classic.

Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know About the People We Don’t Know By: Malcolm Gladwell
Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don't know. And because we don't know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world.

December 2, 9, 16 (5:30-7pm) Register
The Book of Forgiving By: Desmond Tutu and Mpho Tutu
Forgiveness is hard work. Sometimes it even feels like an impossible task. After much reflection on the process of forgiveness, Tutu has seen that there are four important steps to healing. But it is only through walking this fourfold path that Tutu says we can free ourselves of the endless and unyielding cycle of pain and retribution. “The Book of Forgiving” is both a touchstone and a tool, offering Tutu's wise advice and showing the way to experience forgiveness. Ultimately, forgiving is the only means we have to heal ourselves and our aching world.

Summer 2020 Book Club

Are you looking for a Plan B this summer?

Many of us have had to cancel plans, rearrange our schedules, and let go of our predictable summer experiences. This time of the Coronavirus brings uncertainty into many aspects of our lives. What I’m hearing from others, and feeling myself is that this increased sense of vulnerability also ignites more fear and anxiety, sadness and loneliness, and at times, great hopelessness.

I offer you a Plan B! I’m running three book club “clusters” this summer. Each cluster will focus on one book for three weeks. and the genre is spirituality/self-help. This process will invite you to take a deeper look at your heart, your mind, and your relationships. The best part is that you’ll be doing this while in connection with others!

Pricing, dates, and books are below. The book club meets on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7pm, and for now they’ll be run via Zoom. You can join the book club for as many clusters as you’d like!

Pricing:
1 Cluster - $75
2 Clusters - $135
3 Clusters - $180

Cluster 1 - June 10, 17, 24 (5:30-7pm)
”The Dance of Anger: A Woman’s Guide to Changing the Patterns of Intimate Relationships” By: Harriet Lerner
First published in 1985, this book is an oldie but goodie! It’s often sited as one of the best self-help books of all times for women.

Cluster 2 - July 8, 15, 22 (5:30-7pm)
Untamed By: Glennon Doyle
Let’s have a courageous conversation about where we are playing small and what it might look/feel like to unleash our truth.

Cluster 3 - August 5, 12, 19 (5:30-7pm)
More Myself: A Journey By: Alicia Keys
I’ve heard the audio version of this book is a must, as it includes guest appearances and music!

Sometimes our hustle for worthiness creates space in the place where it matters most, with our partner.  We become accustomed to protecting instead of connecting. The courage to be vulnerable becomes increasingly more difficult if we've disengaged or let past hurts and betrayals build up.

This 5-week group for couples offers you real tools to achieve greater peace, authenticity and connection in your relationship.  We will explore the concepts of trust, vulnerability, empathy, and rumbling with our stories in the context of your relationship and you'll have an opportunity to put these tools into practice with your partner.

All content for this group is based on the research of Dr. Brene Brown.

Group Meetings are from 5:30-7:30 on the following dates:
September 12, 19, 26, October 3, and 10

Investment: $500/couple

Daring Adventures In Connection

Are you ready to start creating more connection with your child? What if we told you there's a way to actually build your bond with your child during the hardest of times, rather than feeling like you're losing control? Daring Adventures in Connection is a workshop for both Parents and Kids (grades 3-5) that is assured to send you both away with tools for feeling more confident and connected.

This 4-hour workshop provides time for kids to meet with kids, parents to meet with parents, and finally a closing time where you'll all come together and share what you've learned.

Research consistently shows that the “super-protective” factor that helps young people avoid challenging circumstances during their teen years such as teen pregnancy, violence, addiction to drugs, or truancy, is a child’s sense of being close to his/her parent(s).  Even though your kids are not teenagers yet, the foundation that is laid before those teenage years is vital.

Parenting can be overwhelming and it can be hard to figure out our children.  One moment your child may be laughing on the couch and the next he/she may be exploding over his/her homework.  In this four hour workshop, we will explore how your child’s emotions work and how that relates to behaviors.  You will gain a better understanding of what is going on underneath your child’s behaviors.

In this workshop, parents will learn:

  • Why your child may “lose it” over the littlest things.
  • How to confidently and lovingly handle your child’s emotional moments.
  • Ways that we disconnect from our children.
  • Four Listening Tools to help you parent more confidently and support your child’s development.
  • The importance of connection to your child's brain and emotional well-being.
  • How to create meaningful support for yourself and the hard work you do as a parent.

While you're busy connecting with other parents, your kids will be actively learning and experiencing valuable lessons in Courage Camp! Here we'll use foundational principles based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown and her curriculum from The Daring Way™.  Your kids will learn to:

  • Define vulnerability and experience it as an act of courage.
  • Get clear on why their story of who they are matters.
  • Learn about empathy and self-compassion.
  • Explore their personal values and how they can light the way in times of darkness.
